I am, at my core, a coffee snob. But I am not just a critic of the coffee itself: I also judge coffee shops. I spend a lot of time in cafes writing, especially when I’m on the road and don’t have the luxury of sitting on my couch with my dog. This past week, I was on assignment on Osaka, and visited some pretty good cafes and restaurants. I also visited some lousy cafes and restaurants, but I’m not writing about those. I only go out of my way to write a post when I find someplace that’s special, and in Osaka’s Honmachi area, I found a truly special coffee shop worth telling the world about.

The shop: Euki Visionary - Tales of Origin

Just north of Osaka’s bustling Shinsaibashi area is Honmachi, or Hommachi if you’re gross. The eastern part of Honmachi is rather trendy, home to acai bowls and other delicious food. The western part is a bit more spread out, but feels like a real up-and-coming neighborhood, with New York style pizza and some of the best American BBQ I’ve had in years.

Euki Visionary is tucked into a side street where you would never know to find it unless someone told you about it. There’s one guy running the entire show, and his English is very good. They had oat milk, which is a plus, and based on the machinery in the back, they roast their own beans. The whole space is relaxing and pleasant, with a nice big table open where I could do some studying for the JLPT while I drank my coffee.

How is the coffee and atmosphere at Euki Visionary?

They sell food and blended drinks, but I only ever tried the iced oat milk latte. Folks, let me tell you something: I can judge a coffee shop faster than just about anyone in the world. It’s one of my skills. After one sip of this thing, I loved this place. It was heavenly. The only espresso taste I can compare it to is Verve Coffee and Valerie in Echo Park. The coffee flavor is rich and creamy, enhanced by the milk rather than diluted by it. I had to force myself to pace it out so I didn’t ruin the experience by drinking too fast.

I sat for two hours, loving my coffee and getting some nice work/studying done in there. I told the guy on the way out that the coffee was fantastic. He was pleased. Then I came back the next day and did it again. Those pictures above are from two different visits. If I didn’t have to go back to Tokyo, I would have gone again. If I lived in the neighborhood, I would go to this place every day.

Verdict: should you visit Euki Visionary Coffee & Cacao?

If you’re just visiting Osaka, this place might not be in the most convenient location. But even though it’s not on the way anywhere, it’s worth taking some time, walking a few extra steps, and visiting Honmachi. Get yourself some BBQ, then head on over and try one of these lattes. In seven days in Osaka, I probably went to at least ten coffee places, and this was far and away the best.

If you live in Osaka, get off your butt and head down here. There weren’t enough customers on the days I went. You need to try it so this place stays open for when I’m next in town. Once you try it, I can pretty much guarantee you’ll come back.
