Vita Bowl Osaka Shinsaibashi
Osaka is a dangerous place, especially Shinsaibashi. There is fried chicken everywhere. There are burgers. There are kebabs. There is unagi. There are cookie waffles. If you want to eat healthy and avoid spending too much money, this is not the neighborhood for you. But there is an oasis in all this, just a little bit to the north, and it specializes in my favorite food in the world, the acai bowl.
Vita Bowl in Osaka
Vita Bowl is a cute little shop tucked between the Shinsaibashi and Honmachi areas of central Osaka. The staff is friendly, and you order at the counter before sitting at one of the few tables, or at a counter seat. They specialize in bowls, including salad bowls, but I was here for acai. They had a regular acai bowl, a honeycomb bowl, and a fresh fruit bowl that changes based on what fresh fruit they have. The fruits this time around were pineapple and kiwi, so that’s the one I went for. Oh, and they had oat milk for my iced latte.
Acai Bowl & Coffee
The coffee was pretty good. I can’t say it left a super devastating impression on my mind, but it was nice to sip on a hot day. The bowl, on the other hand, was remarkable. Look at that thing. So pretty. The pineapple and kiwi were of high quality. There were blueberries and lots of banana. Delicious acai paste at just the right temperature and consistency. Granola. Nuts. Cocoa nibs. And what I believe was agave syrup on top.
I’m quite the connoisseur of acai bowls, and I would rate this one right up there with the best. If it were a hair bigger, it could maybe compete with my beloved Aubrey House. Well, not quite, but it’s still better than your average acai bowl. These guys know how to put one of these together, and did it quickly. I had a nice respite from the heat and a leisurely lunch. If they had Wi-Fi in this place, I would have stayed and worked there all afternoon, occasionally ordering coffee and smoothies to my liking.
Verdict: is Vita Bowl worth a visit?
If you’re an Osaka local, you have to get yourself to this place. It’s great. If you’re a tourist, I understand that you have a lot of other food to choose from, many of it more Japanese (and therefore rare to you) than an acai bowl. But most of the food in this area is overpriced, and probably served hot. If you don’t want to pay an arm and a leg for sushi, this can be a way to mitigate the damage you’re doing to your body with everything else you eat on your trip. Plus, it’s a nice cool treat in the summer. I can honestly say this place was better than I expected, and I hope they continue to do a robust lunch business so that it’s still there when I come back.
