I never really understood the hoopla over chicken sandwiches. I’ve been to the homophobic chicken place, and it’s fine. I never tried the Popeyes thing. I haven’t eaten at that French guy’s place in LA. I enjoy a good spicy chicken from Wendy’s, and the Wendy’s on Sunset in LA is the source of one of my fondest memories (watching a security guard fight a drug addict in the middle of the afternoon). But in general, I don’t care too much. After all, I mostly eat vegan when I’m at home.
But when I travel, all bets are off, and sometimes, you see a picture on Google Maps of a food item that demands trying. While I was in Osaka, I saw a picture of a chicken sandwich and knew I needed to eat that thing. This is my story.
New Bang Burger Honmachi
NewBangBurger (stylized as one word on their social media) is located in Honmachi, the area just north of Shinsaibashi in Osaka. Honmachi is a little more spread out and less nuts than Shinsaibashi, and there’s a lot of great places to eat that aren’t overpriced. NewBangBurger has a good amount of seating, and their prices are reasonable.
The board out front advertised some crazy burgers like one where the bun is a bell pepper. I didn’t go for that, but I did try their lunch deal, which involved a chicken burger, fries, and a drink for only 1,490 yen ($9.21). They also let me customize my sandwich by removing the pickles and onions, which I appreciated. The iced coffee was okay, about standard for a fancy burger place.
What I liked about this restaurant (besides the crazy decor) was that I could watch them freshly making my stuff. I heard the guy dunk my chicken into the fryer. I saw him put the bun on the flat top. I watched him apply the spicy sauce. I knew my sandwich was being made fresh, and that care was being put into it.
The spicy chicken sandwich at NewBangBurger
First off, the fries: they weren’t as crispy and golden as I’d hoped. I would love to have had double-cooked fries that were more brown, but these were a bit light and McDonald’s-looking. However, they were crispy and salty, very necessary due to the spiciness of the sandwich.
About that sandwich: look at this thing. It’s huge. There’s like ten chickens worth of chicken in that thing. How are they making money on this place? It was meaty, juicy, crispy on the outside, and SO spicy. The spiciness came not just from the sauce on top, but was embedded into the fried chicken through advanced technology.
Simply put, this was the most delicious spicy chicken sandwich I’ve ever had, and I’ve eaten so many Wendy’s spicy chicken sandwiches that I’ll probably die in about ten minutes. I wish this place were in Tokyo. I’d find excuses to eat there all the time. If you enjoy chicken sandwiches, you have got to try this thing. If you’re not a spicy fan, they’ve got a non-spicy version, and if you like burgers, you can try those. But this place won me over hardcore. Get down here and eat this.
Verdict: is NewBangBurger in Osaka a good deal?
If any locals are reading this: stop what you’re doing and go to NewBangBurger to try their spicy chicken. It is incredible. Super spicy, super crispy, super juicy and delicious. And the lunch deal is so cheap!
If you’re a tourist visiting Osaka, yes, you could eat Japanese food for lunch, like at local spot Unashige. But if you want to live it up and eat something bad for you, this is the spot. Finding a good burger in Japan is hard, and I can’t even remember having another good chicken sandwich in Japan, so I was elated to eat here. Honmachi has got it going on. Eat at NewBagBurger. Buff Mario says so.

NewBangBurger is located in Honmachi, in the same area as Vita Bowl, and only a short walk from Euki Coffee, FFF Coffee, and Kebab & Samsa. Honestly, this neighborhood has some great food and coffee, so if you’re in Osaka, check it out.
