COZZYY COFFEE Ebisu

Eriko and I enjoyed a relaxing day off last week. We got lunch at L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele, and followed that up with a nice sit-and-read at Verve Coffee Roasters. We had tickets to see Obsession in Roppongi at 4:20 (review: it’s fine but not as good as your annoying friend says it is), but it was only 2:15pm. What were we to do with the extra time before the movie? If you guessed “Go to another coffee shop and eat a second lunch,” you’ve probably met me before.

Cozzyy Coffee, the cafe spell-check refuses to let me type

Located just steps from Ebisu Station, COZZYY COFFEE is actually quite big. It’s got a main floor that has the look of an old-timey soda fountain, and an upstairs area with a different entrance. The decor is very old-fashioned, bar in the corner, big communal table in the middle, gigantic chandelier. The name listed online is COZZYY COFFEE New York, so I guess it’s modeled after a place in New York?

I wanted to include screenshots of the menu, but their website only has the items, not their prices, and the items on the website are not the ones we saw. I can tell you that this place is expensive. Eriko ordered a cherry juice, and it was 1,500 yen. But this isn’t about her. It’s about me, and the burger, fries, and ice cream I shoved in my face because I'm a big fat pig.

Burger, fries, and affogato at COZZYY COFFEE

The food took a long time to arrive. I got in some good reading on my Kindle as we waited. Eventually, the food and coffee were brought all at once. The affogato was actually quite nice. Lately, any time I’ve ordered an affogato, it’s been two huge scoops of ice cream and a tiny shot of espresso that barely covers the bottom of the glass. Not so here. It was one scoop, and a lot of espresso, creating the creamy balance I crave.

You can choose between thick or skinny fries (which must be ordered separately from the burger). Of course, I chose thick, because I’m smart. They were good. Properly seasoned, crispy, and I guess an okay amount for 800 yen. But the real star here was the burger. I went with the double smashburger with no pickles or onions, as I do.

This thing was delicious. The quality of the beef was excellent, it was well-cooked, the proportions were great, the bun was solid. Everything was superb. I couldn’t believe it. We were in a coffee shop, and from the looks of it, not a particularly impressive one. How was this amazing burger being served here? I devoured this thing.

We’ve long been on the hunt for Japan’s best burger, and we’ve frequently been disappointed. Our top choice for the past few years has been Henry’s Burger, and honestly, this one may rival it. I wouldn’t say it was every bit as good, but it’s a definite #2 in my mind. And it comes from a random coffee shop. Go figure.

Verdict: is COZZYY COFFEE good?

The atmosphere at COZZY COFFEE is a little strange, and everything is pretty expensive. A burger, fries, affogato, and cherry juice wound up costing us over 5,000 yen. But it really doesn’t matter. If you want to get a really good burger in Japan, you’ll often pay more and visit stranger places to get it.

This is a neighborhood that has a lot of good food, and good burgers at Shake Shack. It would take a pretty special burger for someone in Ebisu to bother trekking to an old-timey coffee shop and waiting around to pay a ton of money for a burger and fries. But this is that burger. We recommend.

COZZYY COFFEE is just a couple minutes’ walk from Ebisu Station, which is just one stop from Shibuya Station on the JR lines. It doesn’t come across as a normal place to sit and do work, but I saw people there on laptops, so if you’re looking for a place to write or whatever, I guess you could try it. There were some people talking loudly while we were there, but at off-times it might be a good spot. And the food is good.
